Abstract
  • This thesis explores how and why the concept of disability is included in, or excluded from, the curricula of graduate programs that specialize in international exchange and/or study abroad. Five graduate programs in the United States participated in this study. Data was collected from program websites and through interviews with nine faculty members of those programs, three of whom are also the directors of the graduate programs that participated. This study found that the concept of disability is under-addressed in the curricula of these graduate programs. Findings also reveal, however, that when disability-related material is covered, it is within the framework of the minority model paradigm, which is congruent with the recommendations of disability rights activists. The interviews and web-materials revealed perceived barriers to including disability-related material explicitly in the curriculum as well as practices and suggestions on how to overcome these barriers. This paper concludes with practical suggestions on how current faculty and administrators in higher education can incorporate the concept of disability into student services-related graduate programs.
