A quest to redefine feminine heroism : heroines of the Brothers Grimm and Angela Carter

Title: A quest to redefine feminine heroism : heroines of the Brothers Grimm and Angela Carter

Abstract: Literary fairy tales facilitate a specific inquiry into heroine quests. Due to the flexibility of the fairy tale genre, a variety of heroine tales have been produced. The specific stages of a heroine quest must be described in order to understand the direction and goals of these quests. In order to be considered a heroine, heroines must experience four stages: separation, isolation, confrontation, and resolution. These stages can be used to compare and contrast tales. Highlighted in this study are the works of the Brothers Grimm, “Das singende, springende Löweneckerchen” and “Fitchers Vogel,” alongside Angela Carter’s tales “The Bloody Chamber” and “The Tiger’s Bride.” Evaluating both sets of heroine quests provides the opportunity to determine if there is an overarching goal between heroine quests written over 150 years apart by authors influenced by different cultures.

Intellectual property rights in the People’s Republic of China : analysis and investigation

Title: Intellectual property rights in the People’s Republic of China : analysis and investigation

Abstract: Intellectual property rights is an incredibly important and salient issue today in both China and the rest of the world. This topic of intellectual property rights, or IPRs, has been an increasingly frictional and hostile issue of contention between
China and the rest of the world for many years. IPR issues and violations in China
touch upon nearly every facet of world wide commerce, trade, research and development spending, transnational corporate culture, international relationships, and international diplomacy. This thesis will delve into the history of IPRs, international
conventions involving the People's Republic of China, the history of China, international organizations like the UN and the WTO, the People's Republic of China's internal judicial and law enforcement infrastructure and organizational hierarchies, and possible solutions to the above mentioned hot topic issue of a need
for an increased and strengthened protection policies of IPRs.

Biocultural perspectives on pregnancy and nutrition and its impact on dental health in Ecuador

Title: Biocultural perspectives on pregnancy and nutrition and its impact on dental health in Ecuador

Abstract: In this thesis I examine the biocultural affects of nutrition and pregnancy on dental health throughout Ecuador. Factors such as diet, fertility rates, cultural practices
and barriers to health care are investigated through a review of the existing literature.
Three main regions of Ecuador were selected for examination -- the highlands, the coast
and the Amazon. Through a focus on the cultural construction of diet, nutritional intake and changing fertility rates, I discuss the main issues and barriers to comprehensive oral health facing low-income Ecuadorians. I argue that a poor understanding of the connections between oral and reproductive health and wide spread poverty interact to produce high rates of stunting, micronutrient deficiencies and poor pregnancy outcomes, especially for Ecuador’s rural populations. In addition, I discuss cultural barriers and, particularly the lack of culturally sensitive care for indigenous populations, as major contributors to mortality and morbidity. I end with recommendations for increasing
awareness of cultural barriers to dental health that are relevant throughout various parts of Latin America. This thesis presents new perspectives on dental care and reproductive health that have the potential to improve overall health for Ecuadorians.

The strengthening of sport and nationalism in Lithuania despite Soviet influence

Title: The strengthening of sport and nationalism in Lithuania despite Soviet influence

Abstract: Upon the annex of Lithuania as a Soviet state, the Soviet Union imposed an order
on Lithuanian athletic figures to represent the Soviet Union. Lithuanian athletes would
now be obligated to represent the Soviet Union in all international sporting events in
which they competed. The international success of Soviet Athletes, which did not exclude Lithuanians, was immense. This strength shown through athletes was meant to bolster the image of Soviet citizens as a unit, but by strengthening athletes in Lithuania, pride and nationalism grew in the small Baltic republic as Lithuanians became proud of their flag despite the Soviet Occupation.
