<title>Portland's silent epidemic : lead poisoned African American &amp; Latino children</title>
      <link>http://hdl.handle.net/1957/12442</link>
<description>Title: Portland's silent epidemic : lead poisoned African American &amp; Latino children&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Abstract: In the United States, lead poisoning is one of the most commonchildhood diseases, and children of color are disproportionately itsvictims. Portland is no different.Despite federal restrictions on lead use, many low income and childrenof color in Portland continue to live, learn and play in leadcontaminated environments. Ingested and inhaled by children, leadcauses many serious health problems including heart disease andpossibly cancer. Lead can also cause neuro-behavioral problems suchas Attention Deficit Disorder. As a result, in addition to causing healthproblems, Portland's childhood lead poisoning epidemic also stealseducation and economic opportunity and parity from primarily lowincomeand people of color, families and communities - thepopulations served by the Urban League of Portland.Portland's childhood lead poisoning epidemic is preventable. What islacking is a properly designed, funded and executed lead poisoningprevention and education program. Public ignorance and politicalindifference are the obstacles. The Urban League of Portland's role instopping childhood lead poisoning is to inform and educate thecommunity we serve, and to mobilize community and political supportto fund and create an effective childhood lead poisoning preventioneffort.</description>
