- Clearcut and shelterwood reproduction methods are both important, silviculturallyviable reforestation tools for southwest Oregon. The ecology of local forests lends itself to the successful application of either method, in most cases; thus, choice of method is typically based on land management objectives, which integrate social and resource values, economics, and administrative, political, and regulatory considerations. This report summarizes the available research and experience information base for the two methods so that ecological, operational, and economic trade-offs can be better understood. Most of the information focuses on planted Douglas-fir, although material on natural regeneration and other species also is presented.
