  • This thesis seeks to explore how visual cues in the new environment affect Chinese international students studying abroad in the United States. Through open-ended interviews, Photovoice, and focus groups, Chinese international students shared their perspectives on their orientation, residence, campus places, color association, and on-campus place preferences. During the study, Chinese international students learned more about their visual perception and increased their awareness of how visual cues in the new environment may influence their emotions while studying abroad. The study results revealed themes relating to students’ perceptions of their new visual environment that can affect their adjustment. This study suggests additional types of university support that could be useful to Chinese international students and their adjustment to the new environment, thus reducing culture shock of various degrees.
