Abstract
  • The purpose of this study was to describe the nature and extent of managers' attitudes toward dispersed recreation, identify reasons for managers' pro and con attitudes and to evaluate factors in the managers' background which might be correlated with their attitudes toward dispersed recreation, Questionnaires distributed via agency were used to obtain data from managers with the US Forest Service, the Bureau of Land Management, the State Board of Forestry and the Department of Natural Resources in the states of Oregon and Washington. Managers' attitudes toward dispersed recreation are overwhelmingly favorable. Managers are aware of the social forces which shape the demand for these activities as well as the values important to users. Policy recommendations described will be helpful in the elimination of barriers to the successful management of dispersed activities in the Pacific Northwest. There was little correlation between attitudes and managers' background attributes. Agency orientation and professional job expectation proved to be more important in shaping managers' attitudes toward dispersed recreation.
