Abstract:
Alcohol is part of our society. We use it to celebrate joyous occasions,
from weddings to anniversaries, from baseball games to reunions, from new jobs to retirement. For many people, alcohol is part of religious observances. But there’s a darker side. For some elderly people, the use of alcohol becomes a problem, affecting all aspects of life—physical
health, emotional well‑being, and family relationships. This publication is designed to help you understand how problems with alcohol develop
in later life and how you can help the older person cope with these problems. We will discuss factors leading to alcohol problems, signs that a problem may exist, suggestions for discussing your concerns with the older person, and guidelines for selecting a treatment program.
