Abstract
  • This bulletin has two intended uses: 1) to report the findings of a small rural region input-output model estimated for Tillamook County, Oregon, and 2) to explain how an input-output model can be interpreted and used. The report was written with a minimum of technical jargon and mathematics to help a lay economist evaluate similar work for other communities. Exports from a rural community provide the basis for sustaining a viable economic community. The input-output model is estimated to evaluate the magnitude and distribution of the economic impact of exports on the business generated for households, business firms and governments in this economic community. As examples, timber processing and cheese manufacturing are the two largest Tillamook exporters. For these industries for each dollar of export sales generated, an additional 73 cents and $1.72 in local economic activity are developed. Of this additional local money resulting from the exports, 32 cents and 49 cents go to Tillamook County households in wages or salaries. Several examples of economic change within the community are included in the report. Closure of a major timber processor and the evaluation of its impact, as well as the potential from additional aquaculture farming, are evaluated in magnitude and distribution. Through these examples, it is possible to see what the small, regional input-output model can do in evaluating local options which might be considered in a policy context in the comprehensive, economic planning of a community.
