Abstract
  • The paper focuses on the American Ambulance Field Service (later American Field Service) and the young American men who, for various reasons, volunteered to serve in it prior to the entrance of the United States into WWI. It discusses the formation of the Field Service, gives a basic overview, and then brings the matter close to home by presenting two Oregonians who volunteered for the Field Service. The paper also touches on the motivations behind the act of volunteering.
