Abstract
  • This study investigated terminal and instrumental value priorities of students in various majors within an academic department. The investigator tested a sample of 99 volunteers of both sexes from several classes in the department of Speech Communication at a major land grant university by use of the Rokeach Value Survey. The statistical analysis employed the Kendall coefficient of concordance W, Chi-square, and the Spearman rank order correlation coefficient to determine the significance of specific value differences between each of the comparison groups. The results indicated significant association of instrumental values among groups as well as some differences in terminal value rankings. Similarities and differences are discussed qualitatively and illustrated statistically, for both within group and between group associations. Findings have implications for educators in the academic major studied, for educators and administrators in general in postsecondary education, as well as for others who have interest in values research.
