Abstract
  • An analytical model is developed to examine the response and efficiency of a vertical rigid, hinged, floating breakwater. The boundary value problem describing the flow field yields a well-posed Sturm-Liouville problem which is solved by separation of variables for the velocity potentials. The equation of breakwater motion about the breakwater hinge is invoked to quantify the reflected and transmitted wave heights fore and aft of the structure, respectively, as well as structure loading and displacement. Maximum wave reflection is achieved through an optimum combination of breakwater and mooring line characteristics. The hinged floating breakwater can be "tuned" by varying the physical characteristics to achieve minimum wave transmission. A computer algorithm of the theoretical model is used to develop design curves which may be employed to estimate necessary physical breakwater characteristics to satisfy specified wave attenuation criteria. The utility of these curves is demonstrated through a prototype design example. It is shown that a structure of reasonable size is an effective dynamic barrier for high frequency waves and an effective kinematic barrier for low frequency waves. The analytical model is verified experimentally. The wave flume, wavemaker, breakwater models and experimental technique are thoroughly described. A comparison between theory and the experimental results is presented and discussed for each breakwater model.
