Abstract
  • This thesis serves as a literature review of dashboards that calls for further research in the area of Feedback Mechanisms (FMs). A dashboard, for the purposes of this paper is a display used to provide performance feedback to a user. An FM is the mechanism used in a dashboard to relay performance information back to a user. This thesis addresses overall dashboard effectiveness for both the short term then the long term. Dashboards are then identified as a compilation of Key Performance Indicators which have various FMs. Since FMs are the base layer of a dashboard, FMs present themselves as the foundation of dashboard effectiveness. Although FMs are the cause of dashboard success, specific research on FM effectiveness is limited. Current dashboard research is related closer to overall dashboard design or Key Performance Indicator development. Finally, since FM research is so limited, testing procedures are suggested and further areas of research are identified.
