Abstract
  • Zero-field quantum beats were observed in Lyman-Beta emission from hydrogen atoms formed by beam-foil excitation. The energy dependence of the magnetic substate relative cross sections for the n=3, L=1 states of H was determined for beam energies in the range from 230 to 500 keV per atom. The theoretical values of the fine structure energy splitting and the natural lifetime of the 3p[subscript]1/2 and 3p[subscript]3/2 states were verified.
