Abstract
  • Particleboard is a commodity composite panel made from the residual materials of other wood products manufacturing companies. The industry operates on low profit margins and thus produces high volumes of differing panel grades. Slight inefficiencies over the course of a year can mean a significant loss in profit. Previous calculations have estimated the added cost for a situation-specific (e.g., one combination of panel thickness, grade, and density) instance and in general, have shown that increases in density cause a loss in profit. This concept is difficult to prioritize for mill personnel operating the equipment who must frequently adjust settings on the press in order for the board to meet the required product standards. The ‘added cost’ calculator developed in this project consolidates the ingredients, size and pricing information into a simple calculation box for mill personnel to quantify the implications of each density variation. This Microsoft Excel spreadsheet calculates the change in density based on the density difference of the total materials used in an optimal situation versus the given current situation.
