Abstract
  • The Fishermen Guilds in Spain (Cofradias) have around one thousand year tradition. They play a central role in the control of the fishing rights in special in the context of coastal fisheries. The paper examines the mechanisms to establish property rights, the quality of these rights and the cost and profits of the system. Then, it is considered the effect of technical changes in production and markets. Finally, it is presented a practical description of the evolution of Guilds Institutions in relation to the distribution of fishing rights in the Catalonia area (North East Spanish Mediterranean) and the effects in the distribution of the production and investments.
