Abstract
  • Kappaphycus alvarezii is economically-important seaweed due to higher carrageenin contents. Suitable culture-method, culture-sites and solutions for fish-grazing have not been tested. Hence, growth-rate ofK.alvarezii under three culture-methods namely raft, line, and cylinder-cage were compared off Velanai and Kayts, in northern Sri Lanka from April-August 2014. Raft and line culture-methods were further tested with 3-combinations, i.e., completely-encircling by a net, combining with shark-models to scare fish; and treatment. Three-replicates were used for each-combination. As cylinder-cage was fully-covered neither net-covering nor shark-model combined. Around 60-seedlings of 90-100g were tightened to each raft and line and inserted into cylinder-cage. From each replicate of line and raft, randomly-selected seedlings were weighted and replaced in three-day intervals to determine growth-rate and weight-lost while entire cylinder-cage was weighed. Intensity of mechanical-damages and grazing-activity were recorded on each sampling-day. In both the line and raft methods the encircled-net combination showed highest growth-rate. However, debris clotted net-meshes resulting low growth-rate at the latter-part of culture-cycle. Cylinder-cage resulted the highest growth-rates and economic-profit. Grazing activity was zero in cylinder-cage and weight-lost due to mechanical-damages was zero as broken-parts can remained inside. Due to smaller-size, cylinder-cage can be cleaned frequently to avoid clotting. Under all culture combinations K.alvarezii growth-rate was redundant after 40-days thus, harvesting is recommended. Conditions at Velanai were best for seaweed-culture. Shark-model was not effective at the latter-part of culture-cycle as fish got used to it. Perhaps, a mobile shark-model could be an alternative. Use of cylinder-cage for culturing K.alvarezii is effective, profitable and environmental friendly.
