Crops were grown at the experimental farms using accepted cultural practices within the limits of experimentation or trials were conducted on growers' fields. Most experiments were designed as randomized complete blocks with three to five replications. Herbicide treatments were applied uniformly with precision plot sprays, or granular formulations were distributed...
The Oregon wine industry has gown in recent years to over 100 wineries. There is a strong need for enology Extension, technical assistance, and technology transfer of relevant research for commercial application. Enology Extension at OSU provides technical assistance to winery personnel including wine analysis, consultation on production problem, training...
The 18 winegrape varieties in this trial were in fifth leaf in 1994. Vines were pruned in February to either a Scott Henry (4 arms on a vertical trellis using two fruiting wires 12 inches apart at 30 and 42 inch height) or a guyot (a double arm on a...
Four year old vines of 18 varieties were cane pruned, trained to a Scott Henry, thinned before veraison, and harvested in October and November 1993. Two of the varieties, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon, were used as standards. Only four varieties were spur pruned to reduce cropping or cluster size: Dolcetto,...
For over 13 years there has been an Area Horticultural Extension Agent available to assist winegrape growers in Jackson and Josephine Counties with production problems by conducting educational programs and applied research projects. While the salary for this position is paid by Oregon State University Extension, support funds which pay...
During the last two years thrips have been suspected of causing shoot damage in the form of reduced leaf size and stunted vine growth in one vineyard in the Cave Junction area of Southern Oregon. While there can be several problems that can cause this symptom in grapes, it was...
Since phylloxera's discovery in a commercial vineyard in August of 1990, nine infestations have been verified in Oregon. With over 95% of Oregon's vineyards planted with ownrooted, Vitis vinifera, non-resistant vines, understanding the insect's biology under our conditions has become important for determining management strategies that minimize rate of spread....
Objectives: 1. Survey Oregon vineyards for the presence, identity and abundance of plant parasitic nematodes. 2. Document seasonal changes in abundance of species of important plant parasites in order to identify optimum times for sampling. 3. Evaluate the efficacy of Nemacur for reducing populations of plant parasitic nematodes.
We harvested the first significant crop from the Woodhall clonal trials in 1993. Early results from clonal trials can be misleading but there are differences between clones that are already quite apparent in some cases. Many of the clone types could be readily identified this season by plant growth habit...
Water quality problems related to excessive algal
growth, high nutrient loading, and low flows have been
occurring along Oregon's Tualatin River. The Tualatin River
is 86 miles long and has a drainage basin of 711 square
miles. The drainage basin incorporates forest,
agricultural, and urban areas. Located in the Portland...

Agricultural scientists recognize farmer knowledge and experience can provide important contributions to the development of new agricultural technologies. However, insufficient use has been made of this valuable resource because farmer knowledge and experience are difficult to collect, quantify, and evaluate.
Backpack sprayers are relatively easy to use--and to misuse. The video shows basic sprayer components and how to use them appropriately. It also outlines how to calibrate the sprayer, calculate application rates, and mix pesticides.
This article includes 609 observations, 531 of which were by Llewellyn. This article is an amalgamation of incidental records for various specific and general areas.
The monthly occurrence of subspecies for 18 terrestrial species are given. The greatest differences in seasonal status appear to be among subspecies of the American Robin, Yellow-rumped Warbler, Savannah Sparrow, Song Sparrow, and Dark-eyed Junco.
The results of 703 observations are given; most of these were made in the 1930's by James Macnab, Jane Claire Dirks-Edmunds, Dorothy McKey-Fender, and others. These results are the most comprehensive throughout the year for any site above 1,000 ft in Lincoln County and hint that bird communities at sites...
This article is based on a total of 353 observations, many of which were systematic censuses.
At West Beaver Pond, Llewellyn made 225 observations of waterbirds during 1982-June 1993. He noted a total of 19 taxa; 53% were seen in five or more of the 10 years with many observations....
There were 5,776 records during 1981-1986 observations, with 99% of these observations during Schrock's systematic 1982-1985 observations. He found 32 waterbird and 99 landbird species. 16% of the waterbird species were noted each year during 1982-1985, and 58% of the landbirds were recorded each year. Semimonthly summaries of the observations...
612 Harlequin Duck records are given for Lincoln County, and another 74 records are listed for other coastal counties. In Lincoln County, Harlequins are found mostly in winter, there were often more males than females, the most ever counted was 14, and there is no indication that they nested.
In...
From 25 April through 30 October 1992, I conducted 14 waterbird and raptor censuses at Cabell Marsh. I observed 33 waterbird taxa and seven raptor species, including hatch-year individuals of five waterbird species. The records for each census are given.
There were 21 days with observations during 30 January-21 May 1974. Herons were already displaying on January 30, so nesting activity can occur much earlier than has been supposed. A yearling was often seen at the nests, but most nesting activity was by adults. Although eggs were laid in at...
This study addresses the relationship between thermal microfronts and coherent vortex structures in homogeneous turbulence. The turbulence is created by mean shear in a weakly stratified flow. The data set is generated by direct numerical simulation providing highly resolved instantaneous three‐dimensional fields of fluctuating velocity and temperature (1603 data points...
Sufficiently large lake loads provide a means of probing rheological stratification of the crust and upper mantle. Lake Minchin was the largest of the late Pleistocene pluvial lakes in the central Andes. Prominent shorelines, which formed during temporary still‐stands in the climatically driven lake level history, preserve records of lateral...
The results of a new multispectral infrared retrieval scheme for obtaining fractional cloud cover and 11-μm emissivity are compared with those of the spatial coherence method which obtains fractional cloud cover assuming that the clouds are opaque at infrared wavelengths. Both methods are applied to 4-km NOAA advanced very high...
This article is based on a total of 204 observations, many of which were censuses.
Between Siletz River Mile (RM) 50.0 and 50.6, Llewellyn made 151 observations of waterbirds during 1981-1993. He noted a total of 12 species; most were seen during several years. Hooded and Common mergansers and American...

We have selected square subareas (110 km on a side) from coastal zone color scanner (CZCS) and advanced very high resolution radiometer (AVHRR) images for 1981 in the California Current region off northern California for which we could identify sequences of cloud-free data over periods of days to weeks. We...
The accelerated diagenesis, maturation, and catagenesis of organic matter to hydrothermal petroleum was studied in sediments from Ocean Drilling Program Leg 139 in Middle Valley, northern Juan de Fuca Ridge. Sediments at Sites 855 and 856 have experienced high heat flow resulting in accelerated diagenesis of the immature organic matter...
High-temperature combustion oxidation measurements of nonvolatile dissolved organic carbon (DOC) have been determined for pore waters from sediments of Middle Valley, Ocean Drilling Program Leg 139, as well as for overlying and near-bottom seawater. The DOC values in the interstitial waters are generally greater than those in the overlying water...
Carbonate nodules and associated sediments from Ocean Drilling Program Leg 139 sites of the Middle Valley, Juan de Fuca Ridge, were studied using a combination of inorganic and organic geochemical techniques. The mineralogy and stable isotopic compositions defined three types of nodules, reflecting the conditions of carbonate precipitation. Nodule ingrowth...
The shallow sections of most holes drilled during Ocean Drilling Program Leg 139 contain alkenones derived from prymnesiophyte algae. The alkenones indicate a paleotemperature of the photic zone in the upper ocean during primary carbon fixation of 7°-15°C, with an average of 10.7°C. Based on laboratory hydrous pyrolyses these alkenones...
The sorbed gases at all four Ocean Drilling Program Leg 139 sites (855, 856, 857, and 858) showed the unmistakable presence of thermogenic hydrocarbons. No indication of abiogenic gas was found. The evidence for the thermogenic hydrocarbons includes elevated contents of higher hydrocarbons (i.e., C₁/[C₂ + C₃] ca. 2-20), δ¹³CCH₄...
