These principles are relatively few and direct. For odor detection to occur, odorous compounds must be (a) formed,
(b) released to the atmosphere, and
(c) transported to the place of detection.
When you prevent or inhibit any of these steps, you reduce or remove the odor problem.
Young trees (those with a trunk diameter of less than 6 inches) can benefit greatly from regular applications of fertilizer. Research has shown that when these trees receive nitrogen fertilizer, they grow faster, develop a denser canopy, and stay green longer into the fall.
Garlic grows well throughout the Northwest. There are two types of garlic frequently grown in home gardens: Allium sativum, the more commonly cultivated type, also called silverskinned or Italian garlic; and Allium ampeloprasum, usually called greatheaded or elephant garlic. The latter is more of a novelty because of its large...

The authors demonstrate the generation of multicycle narrow-bandwidth terahertz pulses in periodically inverted GaAs structures using optical rectification of 2 μm, 100 fs pump pulses. Three different types of orientation-inverted samples are employed: optically contacted multilayer, orientation-patterned, and diffusion-bonded GaAs. The terahertz pulses are characterized by two-color (pump at 2...
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact sediment has on the survival of
bacteria in a typical rangeland stream. This information is an important component in
determining a time integrated prediction of bacterial numbers in the stream sediment and
overlying water. Bacterial survival in stream is a...
Stem mapping of all trees greater than 15 cm dbh has
been completed on the 10.24 hectare watershed (No. 10) at H. J.
Andrews intensive study site. Using a 25 m grid system, mapping
of vegetation into 7 plant communities and then into 4 habitat
types has also been completed....
CTD observations were made along the CODE Central Line, extending offshore toward 225°T from the California coast at 38°40'N, during 12-14 April, 1981. The complete section with nine stations was occupied twice; the offshore portion was occupied three times. The maximum sampling depth was 1000 m. This report includes a...
Background: Mangroves are ecologically important and highly threatened forest communities. Observational and genetic evidence has confirmed the long distance dispersal capacity of water-dispersed mangrove seeds, but less is known about the relative importance of pollen vs. seed gene flow in connecting populations. We analyzed 980 Avicennia germinans for 11 microsatellite...
We constructed an experimental apparatus that used lasers to provide the probe beams for measuring the transient absorption kinetics of bacterioplankton that contain proteorhodopsin, a microbial protein that binds retinal and is analogous to animal rhodopsin. With this approach we were able to observe photocycles characteristic of functioning retinylidene ion...
