Encouraged by successes such as pollution trading and fishery catch-shares, “markets for ecosystem services” (MES) are being promoted to foster conservation. In many cases, however, conditions do not exist for successful use of MES, and costly taxpayer-funded payment schemes could deplete fiscal resources and compete with schools and public safety.
The purpose of this work was to develop a dynamic partial order model of II electrolyte solutions which avoids inconsistencies present in the Debye-1-Iuckel and 1n related theories. It is shown that our results are consistent with activity coefficient data in aqueous electrolyte solutions. The main features of our work...
Our understanding of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) variability in forested stream systems with minimal disturbance is confounded by the complex interactions of hydrologic and biogeochemical controls. In this thesis, our studies evaluate the variability of stream water N and P in a forested, headwater system in the Oregon Coast...
The Oregon State University TRIGA® Reactor (OSTR) has a number of irradiation
facilities providing a wide range of neutron energies and fluxes. These facilities include a
pneumatic transfer tube, a rotating rack, a thermal column, four beam ports, in-core irradiation
tubes, a clyogenic gas transfer system and a large vault...
Over the past century, life expectancy in the United States has dramatically increased leading to an increasingly aging population with people reaching, and spending more years in ‘old age’. While this unprecedented shift in population demographics represents great strides for humanity, it is not without cost. One consequence of longer...
The abundance of algal species and their parasites
was monitored weekly for two years in a sewage lagoon
at the Corvallis Airport, Oregon. During the cooler
months, Euglena species were dominant followed by a
Chlamydomonas assemblage in the spring and a
predominantly Scenedesmus assemblage in the summer and
fall. Parasites...
Despite many investigations genotype by environment interaction remains
one of the least understood factors in plant improvement. Understanding genotypic
differences responsible for such interactions could assist in making more informed
breeding decisions. The components of yield being less complex than grain yield
per se may be useful for selection to...
