This study was conducted to investigate the possible contamination
of foreign pollen at different stages of a wheat breeding
program. These included spaced planted F₂ segregating populations,
replicated yield trials and seed multiplication. The experimental
wheat materials consisted of four different F₂ populations, four
cultivars and two experimental lines.

In CIAT, Centro Internacional de Agricultura Tropical, located
in Palmira, Colombia, a series of experiments were conducted to study
the biology and control of mudplantain (Heteranthera reniformis Ruiz
et Pavon), a member of Pontederiaceae family.
Mudplantain is a perennial aquatic plant which reproduces by both
seeds and stolons. It is...
Aquatic insect population counts can be a good indicator of the health, or water quality, of rivers and streams. Stoneflies (Plecoptera) are particularly susceptible to pollution in streams. However, today’s current method for obtaining these population counts requires biologists to examine individual specimens under a microscope for identification to the...
The objectives of this study were to: 1) determine production
of plant species and utilization by cattle, sheep and deer as related
to plant communities and timber management practices and 2) evaluate
the interaction of range use between cattle and deer and between sheep
and deer as affected by site...
The rate and manner of bioniass loss from decomposing Douglas-fir and western hemlock boles in mid-elevation forests of the central Cascade Range were measured. Bole bark and wood were considered separately. Loss of bole wood due to respiration was measured by change in bole wood density. Loss of bole wood...
Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) is an enzyme present in intestinal mucosa, bile, bone and renal tubule cells. Bile acids have been shown to decrease ALP activity from bone and kidney but not those from intestinal origin. This action can be mimicked in serum and peritoneal fluid samples by the use of...
Large organic debris has important biological and physical
roles within the stream ecosystem. In order to determine the source
area of large organic debris in streams, thirty-nine streams in the
Cascade and Coast Ranges of Oregon and Washington were sampled. The
distance from point-of-origin to channel was measured for thirty...
Zebrafish (Brachydanio rerio) are small, freshwater teleost fishes in the family
Cyprinidae, the true minnows. They are native to the tropical latitudes of India, but
have become widespread through their use as aquarium fish and as models for several
branches of biological research. Their ease of rearing, short generation time,...
