The report below and displays in the lobby summarize the first-year activities of the Oregon Vineyard Soil and Nutrition Initiative. This work has laid the foundations for OVID, the Oregon Vineyard Database, which will fill the second year of OVSNI and is discussed in the final sections.
Forest engineers must frequently make flood frequency estimates for
very small watersheds when designing culvert installations. Empirical
formulae and simplified rainfall runoff models, the most commonly used
techniques to predict floods from very small watersheds, require considerable
engineering judgement to give reasonable results. As an alternative
to such methods, this...

Fuel reduction treatments prescribed in fire-suppressed forests of western North America pose an
apparent paradox with respect to terrestrial carbon management. Such treatments have the immediate
effect of reducing forest carbon stocks but likely reduce future carbon losses through the combustion and
mortality caused by high-severity wildfires. Assessing the long-term...

Diatoms are single-celled algaes that make photonic-crystal-like silica shells or frustules with hierarchical micro- & nano-scale features consisting of two-dimensional periodic pores. This article reports the use of diatom frustules as an integration platform to enhance localized surface plasmon resonances of self-assembled silver nanoparticles (NPs) on the surface of diatom...

A thorough introduction to disease pathogens, signs and symptoms, and management. Nine chapters cover root diseases (Armillaria, annosus, etc.); stem decays (Indian paint fungus, red ring rot, etc.); rust diseases (stem rusts, broom rusts, etc.); other fungal diseases; mistletoes; abiotic diseases; and effects of forest practices such as thinning on...
