Abstract
  • This publication highlights hand-scalping, mulch mats, and herbicides as weed management methods to improve conifer seedling survival and growth. The focus here is on grass dominated environments. All these methods are in use on small woodland properties. Other weed control methods, including grazing and manual brush removal, are discussed in Site Preparation: and Introduction to Conifer Release, EC 1388. This publications discuss your options for site preparation and release treatments. Site preparation, designed to improve reforestation success by modifying site conditions, involves using hand tools, fire treatments, herbicides, or machinery. Release is a treatment used to free young trees from competing, usually overtopping, vegetation.
