Abstract
  • The purpose of this paper is to provide background information and some statistics relevant to a discussion on trade policy. The focus is primarily on the impacts of imports on U.S. employment levels. The paper consists of four parts, the first three of which are theoretical in nature. Parts 1 through 3 are successively: 1) the economics of international trade, 2) labor markets and the impact of international trade in U.S. labor markets, and 3) the issue of U.S.. government intervention in markets. The fourth part of this paper examines the data collected for this study on imports, domestic production, and employment levels.
