  • Systematic crossing of winter x spring wheat cultivars by Oregon State University (OSU) and CIMMYT/Mexico has created a wealth of new germplasm to be exploited. Several desirable genetic traits from the spring wheats are being successfully transferred into the winter wheat germplasm by topcrossing the initial winter x spring F1 hybrid with another desirable winter wheat parent. Frequent interaction of OSU with CIMMYT scientists in Mexico in coordinating the crossing and selection programs continues to expand the scope of the winter x spring program. Continuation of funding from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Rockefeller Foundation (RF) has permitted OSU to establish a strong research and training center for winter cereals. Several former students have resumed cereal research in their home countries and are cooperating in the international nursery program. Excellent interest and cooperation by colleagues in the exchange of breeding material, experimental data, and selection of gifted young scientists for training are the key factors in development of the international program. The Fifth International Winter X Spring Wheat Screening Nursery (IWSWSN) was distributed to 80 cooperators in 46 countries. This nursery was sown at Santa Catalina, Ecuador, as early as March 4, 1977, in the southern hemisphere and as late as January 15, 1978, at Setif, Algeria, in the northern hemisphere. Since the latest harvest date for the nursery was August 25, 1978 at Gembloux, Belgium, the final summary of data did not begin until after January 1, 1979.
