Abstract
  • To a large extent, then, we become what we think we are: Those who think they can do, do. Those who think they cannot, do not. This is true for all of us. But it is especially true for young children. The responses of parents and other adults have a powerful effect on children’s actions. Their reactions actually teach children how competent—or incompetent—they are.
