Abstract
  • Parameters of an econometric acreage response function were estimated for barley in the Northwest using pooled time-series and cross sectional data. Barley acreage was found to be significantly affected by the price of barley, the price of wheat and wheat acreage (a proxy for the "cross-planting" substitution component of government programs). The acreage elasticity with respect to barley price is 0.55 in the Northwest, which is greater than national estimates of 0.30 to 0.36. Wheat was found to be a substitute for barley in Oregon, but was not statistically found to be a substitute in Washington and Idaho.
