Abstract
  • With the annual volume of live fish harvested in 2007 reached over 1 million MT, exported volume of frozen fillets and processed products at 386,600 MT, valued at US$ 979 million, Vietnam's farmers, processors and exporters have made Pangasius the 2nd most important fresh-water fish specie in the world market, after tilapia. The report presents wonderful development of the farming, processing and export of this fish in last 5 years in Vietnam. This fast upward trend has being kept in first quarter of the year 2007. Export of Pangasius from Vietnam in the first 5 months of 2008 reached 209,054 MT, valued at US$ 486.869 mill, keeping its high growth rates of 48% in term of volume and 31.3% in term of value compared to the same period last year. Overcoming many technical and trade barriers in the US and EU markets, Vietnamese Pangasius has achieved high position in the world and has became a bright phenomena of the global aquaculture and seafood trade. The report analyses production and market structure of Pangasius exported from Vietnam last year. The report has also highlighted the main obstacles, challenges, opportunities and future development trends of sustainable production and trade of Pangasius of Vietnam.
