  • Generalised linear estimation and multi-layer perception neural network modelling techniques were applied to the Scottish trawler fleet data in order to estimate which inputs have the greatest impact on boat profits and output. Both produced comparable estimates that revealed inelastic and non-linear response to vessel power and length, negative response to vessel size (tonnage), and elastic response to both trip frequency and trip duration. Profit and catch-effort elasticities were greater for smaller vessels.
