Abstract
  • This study uses cross-sectional data collected from 320 fish farmers across four fish farming regions (Greater Accra, Volta, Ashanti and Western) in Ghana to evaluate the impact of Fish Farmers' Associations on their technical efficiency levels and yield. We considered the stochastic frontier technique to analyse the technical efficiency levels of the fish farmers, whilst the propensity score matching was adopted to compare the average difference in the technical efficiency and yield between fish farmer association members and non-member farmers. The results from the study demonstrate that all the input variables had positive influence on fish farming production with the exception of feed. Most of the exogenous variables were significant in explaining the variation in efficiency. Findings also show that there is a significant impact of fish farmer association on technical efficiency and yield of fish farmers. These results are found to be insensitive to hidden bias and confirms the idea that fish farmer association enhances members' technical efficiency and productivity by easing access to productive inputs and facilitating extension linkages.
