Abstract
  • The food security situation in Latin American and Caribbean countries is very diverse, and even more when special attention is given to the seafood sector. The latter contributes both directly and indirectly to household and national food security, providing food, employment and income generation, among other benefits. This survey aims to give a first approach to the integration of fisheries and aquaculture and food security goals at the policy level. A first approach to the relevance of fisheries and aquaculture to national food security in Latin American and Caribbean countries is carried out through indicators specifically linked to these sectors. Then, a review of national policies related to food security and the fisheries and aquaculture sectors (or agriculture when adequate) was done to assess the inclusion of these sectors in food security policies and/or the inclusion of food security goals in sector development policies. The main components required in policies were the assessment of the relevance of fisheries and aquaculture for national food security, its contribution, and the lines of action proposed (or the lack of them). Finally, both analysis were combined, in order to find the consonance or discrepancy between the relevance of these sectors and the integration in policies. This allowed to group countries, as well as to present an outline of possible lines of action. Additionally, a review some of the key components included in policies in the region are presented as example throughout the analysis.
