Abstract	Using a general equilibrium model that has a resource (fisheries) sector and that incorporates subsistence consumption into consumer preferences, we examine the costs and benefits of participating in international trade. In some cases income transfers may permit potential, but otherwise unachievable, gains from trade to occur.
