Abstract
  • Infectious diseases continue to affect the productivity, efficiency, and consumer confidence of the aquaculture industry. This suggests that disease control remains an important area for further policy development. At the same time and contrary to terrestrial livestock enterprises, where economic incentive mechanisms have been proposed to influence behaviour change in order to achieve the goals of disease control policies, the use of such incentive programs to achieve such aims within the aquaculture sector are largely underdeveloped. While much can be learnt from terrestrial livestock production, several technical and institutional features of aquaculture production could influence the design of potentially appropriate incentive programs. This presentation will discuss the important features of aquaculture production in relation to incentive mechanism design and provide examples of potential fit-for-purpose programs for infectious disease control in an aquaculture setting.
