Abstract
  • The paper presents main achievements of the Vietnamese seafood industry in the last ten years (1998-2007) - a special period with revolutionary developments, in which seafood processing and export sector has gained breakthroughs in both quantity and quality, motivating the whole industry to take off. From a small and unknown country in the world seafood map, Viet Nam has now become one of the largest seafood producers, ranking third in terms of aquaculture production and sixth in terms of seafood export turnover. Viet Nam's total fisheries production reached 4.16 million MT in 2007, seafood export volume was 950,000MT, at value of US$ 3.76 billion, and 4.2 times higher than that of 1998. The paper also points out challenges and key directions for sustainable development of the Vietnamese seafood industry to the year 2020 in process of further globalization by improvement of its competitiveness and strengthening vertical and horizontal integration.
