  • Consumption of organic seafood is low in Europe. One reason may be low availability or high price. However, there seems to be confusion among consumers regarding what organic fish is, and how it differs from sustainable products. This may also contribute to the low consumption level. The objective of this paper is to explore how familiar consumers in three European countries are with chosen eco-labels and how often they actually use the labels when purchasing fish. The results will reveal whether the labels actually have an effect. A survey in Great Britain, Germany and France was conducted with 500 respondents in each country. Descriptive analysis and ANOVAs were used to analyse the data. The results show that familiarity with the EU leaf for organic food is very low. Between 60 and 85% of the respondents were completely unfamiliar with the label.  Furthermore, the share of respondents who never use the label when buying fish varies from 75 to 92 %. The results are, however, slightly more encouraging for the national organic labels. The results show that the ambition for the EU-leaf to become a common organic label across the EU countries, making the consumer choices easier, has not been achieved. Rather, it seems that it is necessary to use both the EU leaf and national labels together in order to get consumer attention. This contributes to higher costs for the companies who wish to export organic seafood to other countries. The consequences of this are discussed further.
