Marine Reserve Creation and Interactions between Fisheries and Aquaculture: a Bioeconomic Model Analysis

  • The rapid growth of aquaculture affects wild fisheries in several ways. We present a bioeconomic model of the interaction between capture based aquaculture that depending on harvest of wild juvenile organisms with a wild fishery, including an effect of marine reserve implementation. We assume the catch of wild juveniles for culture reduces the intrinsic growth rate of the wild fish stock, and hence wild stock size and commercial harvest. The introduction of a marine protected area, and dispersal from this area, may limit these negative effects. The model considers both open access and economically optimal management outside the marine protected area using numerical simulation analysis. The results show that a marine protected area of a certain size may not only compensate for negative effects of a capture based aquaculture upon a wild fishery, but may be biologically and economically enhancing for both open access as well as optimal management regimes outside the reserve.
