Is the Fish Labor Market Flexible? A Study of Employment Trajectories of Fishers in a French Atlantic Coast Region

  • The goal of this research is to analyse the employment trajectories of more than 1300 fishermen in the French region of Pays de la Loire (Atlantic coast). The dynamic analysis of careers in the fishing sector is of importance to predict the future of this sector. Indeed, the flexibility of the fishermen labour market represents a way to partly compensate the problem of recruitment this market faces by improving the matching between labour supply and demand. In order to analyse the problem, we use a longitudinal database to model transitions between statutes. A fisherman’s career is characterized by many boarding positions related to different statutes (apprentice, deckhand, engineer, second, skipper). Several transition matrices are estimated for the fishing labour market and linear probability models are applied to show the influence of time, seniority, status and past experience on the probability of job transitions. The results indicate a strong variety and flexibility of careers and evidence of the impact of prior experience. Nonetheless, the probability of job transitions declines throughout the working life, raising a problem with an ageing fishermen population.
