Abstract
  • Do the incomes from fishing activities enhance the living standard of coastal communities? This is a study of the income sources of the fishermen who live along the coast and earn their livelihoods by exercising traditional fishing activities. The small-scale purse seiners in two fishing communities in the province of Khanh Hoa are the cases that were surveyed. The sample is about 30.4% of the population of 125 purse seiners in Cam Ranh and 24.1% of the 79 seiners in Nha Trang. This demonstrated that Nha Trang fishermen on average had the lowest total monthly income, but a greater part of this is fixed compared to Cam Ranh - secure income comes at a cost. However, on average, crew members whose earnings come through different types of share arrangements and fixed daily wages earned somewhat more in these fisheries than in the seafood processing companies in the Province. With such attractive earnings, why do coastal fishermen continue to live in poor conditions? The purpose of this article is to investigate whether it is equality of giving remuneration for fishermen and real improvement in living of the coastal communities.
