Abstract
  • From 2012 through 2013, NOAA Fisheries Service conducted a national study to better understand participation levels in ocean recreation activities in the United States. The online survey instrument was administered to a sample of respondents on a web-enabled panel. Residents from all 50 states and the District of Columbia were sampled in each of six, two-month waves. There were eight ocean recreation categories of interest: recreational finfishing; recreational shellfishing; hunting waterfowl or other animals; viewing or photographing the ocean and wildlife; beachcombing and tidepooling; water contact sports such as swimming and surfing; boating and related activities such as wake boarding and tubing; and outdoor activities not involving water contact such as beach volleyball and camping. The resulting dataset provides an abundance of information regarding numbers and types of ocean recreation trips made by respondents, details of individual trips, and respondent characteristics. The survey also included questions regarding location amenities (e.g., proximity to residence), weather conditions (e.g., presence of wind), and how hypothetical changes in air temperature (e.g., +/- 5 °F) may influence ocean recreation preferences. This talk will provide more details about this study in general and focus on factors that may determine participation in one ocean recreation activity over another.
