Abstract
  • As part of PrimeFish project, the competitiveness of European fisheries and aquaculture will be analysed by examining the supply chain relations and regulation of selected value chains of five commoditised fish species within the EU: Atlantic salmon, rainbow trout, cod, herring, sea bass and sea bream; as well as imported direct substitutes: pangasius from Vietnam and cod from Canada. Value chains analysis will start with a sectoral level examination of the input-output structure of 24 species-country combinations, serving as a sample framework for an in-depth analysis of several value chains, taking a Global Value Chain (GVC) perspective. The selection criteria will be developed in this first exploratory phase and will include contribution to economy and prospects for future development. In addition, case studies will be used to highlight impacts of mandatory and market-based regulatory regimes along with governance and power-relations within the supply chain on risks, costs and rewards to participants. Non-market effects (aka externalities) will be assessed and valued using revealed and stated (monetary) preference methods. The expected results are value chain input-output structure, costs & benefits of compliance with voluntary market-based labelling & certification schemes, industry dynamics including opportunities and threats, valuation of non-market effects of aquaculture and capture fisheries activities. Participation of a diverse range of primary and secondary stakeholders, through active engagement at each stage of the study, would be essential for ensuring the collection of high quality data and its verification, as well as providing direction to areas of research with the highest potential impact.
