Abstract
  • Production data from the red grouper fishery, Mexico, were analyzed to determine the production function. Three different models were tested in cross-sectional data from the period 1988 to 2014. The data were collected from the logbooks provided by skippers. Number of fishermen (crew) per trip varied from 3 to 15, and a histogram of frequency revealed that this variable has two modes: four and nine that corresponded to vessels type "A" (nursery vessel with small boats) and type "B" (mechanical winch to pull long lines), respectively. The analysis of the bi- modal behavior demonstrates that in early 1980s, the percentage of "type A" vessels was 33%, in 1990s it was 38% and in 2010s it was 95%. There was a substitution of type B vessels by type A. Catch data were regressed on the variable crew-day, to test linear, reciprocal and quadratic models. The general model with highest goodness of fit was the quadratic. An interpretation of this is that the combination of fishermen and days at sea reaches an optimum production and then drops. The parameters of the model changed from year to year, indicating structural changes. The maximum production was reached with the combination of fishermen and days at sea of 220 crew·day. The maximum production decreased drastically through the time, from 3,000 Kg per trip to about 1,500 Kg (50%). This significant reduction coincides with a reduction in the biomass (overexploitation) that affects the production function through the time.
