Netting Billions: A Global Valuation of Tuna

  • Tuna is one of the most globally traded seafood products, and yet information about total sales values and how they are broken down between different market segments and products is not widely available. This research is the output of a study funded by Pew Charitable Trusts and completed by Poseidon, a UK-based fisheries consultancy company. The research involved compilation of catch data provided by all tuna RFMOs into a catch database, which enabled the identification of global catches of tuna by ocean area, species, vessel flag, fishing gear and species. Catches were segmented for different fishing methods, species and ocean areas into different end markets (such as canned tuna, domestic sales, fresh and frozen sashimi, and by-products of tuna processing). Based on price data sourced from a wide range of innovative sources, catch volumes and prices were combined for different market segments to provide estimates for 2012 and 2014 of global ex vessel values and final consumed values of tuna in US$ by marketing channel/destination. These estimates provide illuminating and improved understanding about the relative contributions to total global values of tuna sales from different oceans, fishing methods, species, and product types. The very large numbers involved argue for continued improvements in financial and human capacities to support improved management of tuna resources. Presentation of this research will include information about the assumptions and methodologies used, as well as the results.
