Abstract
  • The Forest Elevation Snow Transect (ForEST) project is a paired site elevational snow study. It is designed to measure how snow accumulates and ablates under different forest structures across an elevation range. The ForEST project has been ongoing since the winter of 2011-2012 within the McKenzie River Basin of the Oregon Cascades. Five sites within the Middle Fork of the Willamette watershed were deployed for the winters of 2011-2012 and 2012-2013. Two sites were discontinued following the winter of 2012-2013. The remaining three sites continued through the winter of 2015-2016. At three elevation bands a paired ‘forested’ and adjacent ‘open’ site were chosen based on a binary tree regression approach that determined elevation classes of peak snow water equivalent (SWE). The 2001 National Land Cover Dataset was used to determine the vegetation class, either ‘forest’ or ‘open’. The low sites ranged from 1100-1200 m, mid sites from 1300-1400 m, and high sites greater than 1450 m. Each site is equipped with a meteorological station that measures the base components of the energy balance. Moreover, at each elevation band a snow course is performed monthly during the accumulation period (Dec-April) and bi-weekly during the ablation period (April-June). Each snow course is 1 km in length with SWE measurements taken every 100 m and snow depth measurements taken every 5 m. Half of the snow course is within the open area and half under the forested area.
