Abstract
  • As a result of warming temperatures and subsequently declining snowpacks, forest fires are increasing in frequency, intensity and extent across the western USA. In turn, forest fire disturbance affects patterns of snow accumulation and ablation by reducing canopy interception and modifying the snowpack energy balance. Following a 2011, high severity forest fire in the Oregon Cascades, we measured snow, micrometeorological conditions, and sampled snowpack surface debris in adjacent burned and unburned forest sites. As a part of the greater Willamette Water 2100 Project, these data enabled the characterization and parameterization of forest disturbance effects to snow hydrology, in order to improve the predictive capacity of hydrology models to estimate ecosystem disturbance effects to water resources under current and future climate conditions.
