Abstract	In the majority of poultry slaughter houses in the United States, birds are hung on shackles and then not touched by human hands until the carcass is processed and packaged. As a result, a reliable method of slaughter that can be automated must be available. Stunning addresses the welfare needs of the bird by providing a humane death. In addition, it helps ensure that the birds will be killed properly in order to prevent live birds from entering the scald tank which would result in a breach of animal welfare and condemned carcasses. This paper will examine electrical stunning as well as current alternative poultry stunning methods and determine which method is the most humane in a commercial setting.
