Abstract
  • In the majority of poultry slaughter houses in the United States, birds are hung on shackles and then not touched by human hands until the carcass is processed and packaged. As a result, a reliable method of slaughter that can be automated must be available. Stunning addresses the welfare needs of the bird by providing a humane death. In addition, it helps ensure that the birds will be killed properly in order to prevent live birds from entering the scald tank which would result in a breach of animal welfare and condemned carcasses. This paper will examine electrical stunning as well as current alternative poultry stunning methods and determine which method is the most humane in a commercial setting.
