Abstract
  • We present velocity observations from a shipboard acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) on RN Endeavor during cruises E9608 (14 August to 1 September 1996) and E9704 (25 April to 15 May 1997). The cruises were conducted as part of the Office of Naval Research Coastal Mixing and Optics Accelerated Research Initiative. The objective was to rapidly survey a region in the Middle Atlantic Bight south of Cape Cod, Massachusetts. The ADCP was an RD Instruments hull-mounted 307-kHz unit. Data were collected nearly continuously during both cruises, in a region about 80 km square around 40.5°N, 70.5°W. Vertical bin length was 4 m and the typical depth range in open water was 200 m. To reference the velocities to earth coordinates, we used bottom-tracking supplemented by differential global positioning system (GPS) navigation. A GPS attitude system was also used, in combination with the ship's gyrocompass, to determine heading. This report describes the ADCP processing steps and presents the observed velocities. In addition, we apply an empirical tidal model to estimate and then remove the barotropic tidal currents, and we present the resulting subtidal velocities.
