  • “A Monument to Jim Crow’: Post-War Racial Liberalism and the Battle Over the Booker T. Washington Black Veterans Hospital” examines the proposed Congressional bill to build a segregated black veterans hospital as a memorial to Booker T. Washington in Franklin County, Virginia. This paper examines the developing ideology of racial liberalism at the center of post-war claims to citizenship and the nation’s self-image. This work contributes to the larger scholarly conversation about the impact of World War II on American racial politics. By drawing on a large body of historical scholarship that examines World War II as a critical turning point in discussions of race and politics, this paper offers insights into the impact of global engagement on citizenship conversations in the United States which were fueled by the differential treatment between black and white veterans after the war.
