Abstract
  • The breaking radii of variously discolored veneers of six different hardwood species were small enough, for most of the discolorations, to indicate that such veneers can be used successfully on members having curved surfaces. When expressed in terms of the minimum radius of curvature attained without fracturing, the breaking radius in nearly all cases was small enough to be amply covered by a minimum factor of safety of 3, as suggested in ANC-19, Wood Aircraft Inspection and Fabrication. The only definite exception was veneer discolored by decay fungi. Some uncertainty as to suitability for sharply curved surfaces was indicated, however, for mineral stain in yellow birch, for the dark reddish-purple variety of mineral stain in yellow-poplar, and for gum streaks in mahogany and khaya.
