The Voices Initiative at Oregon State University : Using OHMS and Omeka to Describe and Provide Access to Oral History Content

  • This presentation provides a detailed overview of the ways in which the Oral History Program at the Oregon State University Library Special Collections and Archives Research Center has used the Oral History Metadata Synchronizer (OHMS), Omeka, an open source plug-in, and custom .css and .php scripting to make contextualized oral history content available online. The product of this work has been packaged as The Voices Initiative at Oregon State University. At the time that this talk was delivered, about 180 hours worth of oral history content had been made available via three websites published as part of The Voices Initiative. This talk specifically touches upon OSU's rationale for pursuing The Voices Initiative platform; provides a primer on creating metadata within OHMS and Omeka; discusses the functionality provided by the OHMSObject plug-in and OSU's custom .css and .php scripting; and makes mention of three completed websites as well as three forthcoming websites that rely upon this platform to provide full access to content.
