Abstract
  • Cascadia is the physiographic region defined by the active tectonics and attendant geo-hazards of the Cascadia Subduction Zone. In contrast to many other coastal environments in the U.S., geo-hazards along the Cascadia coast are dominated by a tectonic context on the Pacific rim “ring of fire.” Washington, Oregon, and California lie on the Cascadia subduction zone, a region that promises a destructive earthquake coupled with devastating after effects. Besides the possibility of the Cascadia megaquake, the Pacific Northwest is susceptible to various other forms of natural disasters, including tsunamis, earthquakes, landslides, and more. Despite this inevitable danger, many Pacific Northwesterners are seemingly oblivious to the impact that these natural disasters could have on their daily lives. The Cascadia Coastlines and Peoples Hazards Research Hub, is an 18.9 million dollar National Science Foundation funded project over the next five years. The hub is providing an avenue for coordinating research in Pacific Northwest coastal communities among numerous academic and government organizations to inform and enable integrated hazard assessment, mitigation and adaptation in collaboration with local communities. As part of the Hub project we have 10 Charter fellows who are undergraduate social science and STEM students. The Charter fellows have designed and implemented a community survey in Pacific NorthWest of 18-26 year olds to learn how much these individuals know about the dangers of future earthquakes and tsunamis. The results of the survey will be used to make policy suggestions that better prepare young people for the inevitable future coastal earthquakes and tsunamis. The poster I will present shares the preliminary findings from a sample of N=312 respondents. My poster will be reporting on young people’s (18-26 year olds) attitude, opinions, awareness, and perspectives on dealing with future natural disasters (tsunamis and earthquakes).
